speedtest, optimising connection

Yo, I did a speed test at my new pad and I'm disappointed really.

According to speedtest the average optus download speed is 13Mbps. What would be the best way to get those speeds? I have the modem that optus supplied and a Belkin N router.

How much of a difference would I see if I bought one of the modem/routers that were recommended in Ion's thread? http://etozclan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=99&t=6513

Ta for your help! I know very little about networking.

There are a few things that affect a WiFi signal , line of sight , thickness of walls between NIC & router , TV's or anything else that generates an electromagnetic field between the NIC & the router as well (degrades signal).

What model is the NIC?
Is it PCI or USB or PCMCIA ?

MSY advised on PCI over USB for signal strength.
Also D-Link give better signal strength than TP-Links (Better Chipset?) I have a TP-Link TL-WN951N Model as a spare NIC atm.

D/l speeds have increased from about 380 Kbs to 500 Kbs through steam using a similar setup to yours over at my ex's place.

Optus modem with a TP-Link super G router & I think my the WiFi limits the connection something fierce.

Plug directly into your modem without the router & re-run your speedtest , it does make a difference but it is not always practical.

I was looking for a modem /router as one device , not two in the hope of eliminating the unnecessary bandwidth loss , I get when I'm on WiFi , I'll test with my new billion when I return home.

Worst case scenario , hit up the people on http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/.
They specialize in network connectivity & ISP stuff.

A quick tip for WWAN guys, get a usb extension cable(No more than 2 metres) and setup your dongle as far away from the PC as possible. You will notice a big improvement in signal strength.
Also WWAN uses line of sight, so find out what direction your tower is and point your dongle that way for max signal strength.

I use Telstra Next G and can get stable 50ms with the occasional twitch. I can get DL speeds of 1mb/s. A full server will make it struggle though. 3g WWAN is no good for anything other than email and FB.

Cheers

Good tip G-Train. Mine is setup like that already- but I am sure someone may find that useful.

The issue here over the last 2 nights has been ISP's related.

Or you can buy a dongle that has an antenna port
I plug mine to the home aerial for over 9000 super signals!
