Hi,

Recently (like the last 6mths or so) I’ve been experiencing this horrible lag type problem.
Basically I get freezing/warping/glitching in the middle of a firefight. When not in battle everything is fine.
One second I’ll be strafing in one position against an enemy, the next we’ll both be in different positions
but I’m dead. Hit rego is f*d etc etc

The top part of the lagometer goes nuts with yellow splotches(no red or green spikes)
According to Dr Google that indicates delayed packets, not packetloss apparently.

I’ve tried everything Google says, but it still happens.

125fps ingame always stable
48 ping hardly ever changes
snaps 20
rate 25000
maxpackets 100 (have changed this but still the same)

8meg Ram < I hope you mean 8gig
I5 processor
Nvidia 1gig videocard

Also, it seems to really kick in when there's more than 4v4 on the server
Against only bots or 3v3 its fine.

It's turning me into a whingy whiny bh
I don't like it and I need it to stop

……..thanx for reading

Hi Bainy, what is your intertoobz connectxions like? ISP? Location? Normal ping? Does ping spike? How much pr0ns are you downloading while playing ET? Do you have wireless enabled on your router?

Test.

Hey noobit,

Ping’s all good normally and has been for ages

With Telstra, it’s nearly always 48, (am about 2hrs North of Syd) doesn’t spike
and I don’t get any red or green lines, just these goddamn yellow splotchy thingies…

No downloads while playing and the missus doesn’t download anything as far as I am aware
I just use ethernet as well, no wireless

I’m at a loss, I was hoping someone has had this issue before

half your skill is in your config

Hi Blusky,

well I’ve only tried on the HS server, hardly any aussie servers left

it was the same thing – was normal with minimal players, then starts stuffing up when more hop on.
I know on OZ when the server gets maxed out it starts glitching, but this is different, it does it
when there’s only 5v5

Also, i’ve disabled firewalls to eliminate, still no go

Did you have any major hardware changes? i.e. Router, computer parts etc

Also I second testing on more than one ET server – see if it is just OZ hating you.

Have you tried a new install of ET?

Also, I was wondering what effect cl_packetdup may have…

Sounds like there’s packets being dropped once you hit a certain level of traffic. But that’s only a guess.

Also, what O/S are you using? Have you checked your video drivers lately? I had windoze decide it needed to auto update my video drivers once and ended me up on some plain vanilla drivers which resulted in a problem like you are describing (lag under load).

Have you done the !fixmynet and fixgfx (or whatever it is)?

Test.

No major changes, last upgraded a year ago

Tried the HS server same thing

Did a fresh install on Sunday

Have tried cl_packetdup 0 1 2 3 4

Have also reset to etconfig.cfg

Thanks anyways for suggestions cowsy, this thing has fully got me stumped

I’m using XP, and updated my gfx drivers about 2 weeks ago. I’ll double check them.
I’ll try the !fix stuff, pretty sure I already did and it made it worse but I’ll try again.

At least you and cowsy are better at describing the problem,
Googling ‘yellow splotches in lagometer’ comes up with some weird shit

Can we just confirm you aren’t on any kind of wireless connection at any point (sorry, have to ask)

Do you play any other games (i.e. need to see if its just ET lag)

I am wondering if a continuous ping test with a large-ish sized packet will show losses. I think this is a question for BR – I’ll ask him.

Bainy , what sort of modem are you using?

Can you run a Tracert or a Pathping from the command prompt & post how many hops you take to the Pub server?

click start , in the run box type cmd & hit enter.
type tracert 173.199.80.128

It will list all the different computers it has to jump through to reach the pub server.

If it’s modem related you can try setting your modem to PPPoA instead of PPPoE.
Check the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit or something like that) size (packet size in your modem/router) , higher values (1492) send more data in one go but if your dropping packets this may hurt your connection so trying lower number may help (eg 1200).

If your not confident about these settings post back or call you ISP. xD

Sup Ion,

Yeah mate, I’ve checked those settings you mentioned. My head is going to explode with all this
computer shit l’ve learnt.

But good news! I conned my sister into lending me her laptop for the arvo, and I copied ET across.

No piece of shit splotches!

So it’s def a hardware issue with my comp and not the net side of things.
Hopefully I can work it out now(suspecting my gfx card)

Thanks everyone for suggestions!

Sorry to bring back an old thread / post but have you fixed this yet? If not here are some other ideas that may help you out?

Have you tried to set the affinity settings of your i5? To do this follow the below steps :

1. Open up your Task Manager CRTL+ALT+DEL
2. From the menu bar select the Processors tab.
3. While you have your ET.exe running right click on the link.
4. Now you will see in the drop down menu a list with just below Set Priority then Set Affinity.
5. Now just un-check the boxs or the cores that you don’t want to use leaving the cpu 0 as the main core.

Try this as the above solution has worked for me before and others that I know. Another note * This will have to be done everytime you start ET, which is a pain in the but but <a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="[COLOR="#FF0000"]this“>[COLOR=”#FF0000”]this program will help you out * It’s a FREE program that I still use. 🙂

Also I noticed you said you have a Nvidia 1gig videocard. What type of card is it a GTX ###? Would be good to know as some of these cards take a lot of power to run. I run two GTX 570’s so I had to upgrade my PSU to compensate for the power consumption… Here is an example of what power my GPU’s take.

Thermal and Power Specs:
Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) – 97
Maximum Graphics Card Power (W) – 219
Minimum System Power Requirement (W) 550

So with 2 GPU’s it totals to 438 and with everything else running or using power I needed a PSU that would work or be able to handle everything in my system.

I’m suggesting this option because maybe you don’t have enough power or something is drawing to much power? If your not sure here is a PSU calculator <a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="[COLOR="#FF0000"]link“>[COLOR=”#FF0000”]link that you can do yourself and add your components to it and give the results back in your post.

I hope that you have fixed this problem and if you have can you share it with all of us as this is becoming a common problem with the game and I really do think it has something to do with the new GPU coming out. Seeing this is an old game the new hardware may not support or simply bypasses some of the old features.

Cheers,

escape.

Hi Escape,

Thanks for the tips,
Yes I have solved it (touch wood) I still get the occasional yellow blip but nothing like before.
I’m not 100% sure exactly which setting was causing the problem, but it was def the gfx card.

Anyways, what i did was:
Reset all Nvidia settings to default
Downloaded and installed new nvidia drivers and then followed these instructions from Google

1 – The most important graphics quality setting in ET is r_picmip, and it must be set to 0 (best quality) instead of the default 1. Call the console and type /r_picmip to check. If it’s at 1, for Satan’s sake, /r_picmip 0 then /vid_restart. If over 8 years after the game was released you can’t reach a steady 76 FPS with this setting at 0, go play Minesweeper then. The same suggestion applies if you’re using an AMD/ATI graphics card.

2 – The second most basic setting which improves graphics a lot, besides having very little impact on performance, is anisotropic filtering, which makes textures on a plane surface, like the ground, don’t look blurrier the further away you look at them. This one must be set via the video drivers control panel. Right click on the desktop, select the NVIDIA or the ATI Catalyst control panel, then go to the 3D settings section and set it to 16x. Do not confuse this with anti-aliasing, which is the most taxing setting for a GPU. The NVIDIA control panel already has individual profiles for most games, including ET. ATI’s pathetic control panel – which even needs fucking .NET to be installed in order to run – of course doesn’t.

3 – Still on the control panel, make sure that vertical sync is set to force off, and if you have an NVIDIA card, the threaded optimization setting MUST be set to OFF (for ET only – leave it at AUTO for other games).

I also set the Multi Display option in the Nvidia settings to Single Display performance mode

My gfx card is GTX 460 and the power supply from memory(which is complete shit) is 1000w
so it should have plenty of power. Plus when playing newer games which are way more resource
demanding I don’t seem to have an issue.
