Hey guys, I’m about to do a full reinstall of my system so I can setup RAID and junk. Of course I want to be able to keep my current XP and stuff so I figured I’d ask exactly HOW do we keep our current XP?
Is there a particular file snuggled somewhere in my ET directory that I have to keep or is it all stored server side?
Any help is appreciated thanks.

Heh, I feel like a newbie asking this… 🙄

I thought of that but I just wanted to check that it was ok. I guess the only real way to reinstall is to ghost my HDD and then setup raid and rebuild the system…

Depending on what type of raid he means (theres a number of different raids that all do different things), he’s probably trying to set his pc up so all of his hard disks act like one giant hard disk. This is what you mean aye vamp?

I would just grab your whole et directory, that way you don’t have to redownload et or any maps / mods / reset up your xp etc 😀

And guys for the record, don’t go near raid if you don’t have a damned good reason too. Its a lot of work to setup and really isn’t that helpful in my opinion (Plus if you do something wrong you’ve still got to reinstall an operating system so you still lose everything whether you muck it up or not :S).

I have a damned good reason to.
Actually I don’t really, this PC is becoming my portable machine n is gunna be a bit of an experiment for me.
I was planning on reinstalling my PC anyways because windows was giving me the shits and I felt like a clean install. It does the coul good to clean up every now n then LOL.
SO yeah, my new experiment for RAID. To answer the questiona s to what RAID is, RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independant Disks, some people replace the Independant with soemthing else but I forget what it is, basically with the raid I’m going to configure, theres going to be 2 x 250GB HDD’s and they’re going to basically be mirrors of each other. Which mean if one hard drive fails all I have to do is quickly replace it, the RAID should rebuild the array and hey presto all data preserved. Of course the RAID array is only going to be necessary in this portable computer until the solid state disks come down in price enough, then I wont have to worry about HDD’s failing as much and will be able to stress less.

Anyways, I’ll just copy across my whole ET pub directory. Actually I’ll jsut copy all my Game directories. Will make everything so much easier. 🙂
Well, thanks guys. Now I just have to finish backing up everything from my PC. If only I had an extra 250GB HDD around I’d just swap out my current one and start from there. also need a floppy drive to load the RAID controller….. maybe this would be a task best left until next weekend…. when I’m slightly more prepared…. Yeah, I’ll just start backing up everything now and rebuild next weekend. By then my HDD mobile racks might be in….
