Hi all,
Yet another Hardware / Software issue from from an enthusiastic tinker.

OK,so I went to MSY yesterday & bought a Core i5 Mobo & Cpu /New Graphic Card / 4GB kit DDR3 ram.
So far , so good, took it all home & rebuilt my system reusing PSU /HDD / Optical Drive /Case without backing up my HDD & doing a clean install (I thought I could get away with it/WRONG!).
Started up the machine & started to load the O/S (WinXP 64) ,then the worlds fastest BSOD & system restart before I could read the stop code error.
So tried “last known good configuration” , then “Safe Mode” but it kept Blue screening repeatedly, so I’m assuming it’s either a memory issue (DDR3-1600) or all hardware changes have been outright rejected by O/S.
Basically I connected all hardware & let BIOS configure everything including ram timings so it might explain it.
So in goes the windoze disk & I choose repair option 2 which does an O/S roll back to O/S disk default & now I can get into windoze after restarting & device manager looks like it’s half conflicts / unknown devices.
So I go to control panel & remove all previous hardware drivers that are no longer relevant, restart & start installing relevant drivers, works beautifully!
Restart, install SP2 from 2 second partition to C: drive & restart,so now I’m thinking I have consumed a lot of memory doing all this so I’d better cold boot before I do win update.
Run win update & I get an error message,so I try running Microsoft update & still getting same error message,so I restart try again,FAIL ,cold boot, keep trying & with same result over & over.

So the error reads “The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context”

I’m using a VLK & never had this problem before & xp 64 does not do WGA checks so now I’m thinking ,backup my data, & do a clean Win7 64 install & just accept I’ll be doing a few days of re-installing software etc.
If I can repair O/S I’d like to(Lazy, even if not correct option)but more importantly, the impression I get is I will have to re-install ET & lose my my current profile & all that XP ๐Ÿ˜€
Re-installing all the maps I d/l’d from clan site NP but which ver of ET should I be using?
Last time I went with WolfET.exe then ET_Patch_2_60.exe but I saw a post with a reply from Lestat pointing to a ET_Ultimate_Installer_1.6_beta.exe at http://etui.kashu.fr/

I have both options on second partition but have never used Lestat’s option & if I did, does the Oz server support that version?

I don’t believe PB will be an issue for me as I’ve always run the default setting with blood effects off & low quality sky on & bind z /kill key.
I am assuming I will not be able to use my i0n handle but if I re-letter it(spelling variance, same name)will it work? & more importantly will a sever mod/admin ban me for name stealing?
I’ll wait a couple of days for an answer to this topic before I go the clean install option but the ET stuff is more a concern than the broken O/S update.

Oh,for those of you who might be interested, here’s the hardware changes I made ๐Ÿ™‚

Mobo http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=3164&ProductName=GA-P55-UD3
MSY told me 2-3 weeks before any Asus equivalent would be in stock at my local branch ๐Ÿ™

CPU : http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLBLC

Ram : http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=88
Ram is supposed to run at 1600 but BIOS says it’s running at 1333 (limited by cpu? memory controller is on die & not on north bridge any more)

GPU : http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=iidCxhgPOMl5Zs9R

Old stats still in profile, will update after issue is resolved.

Cheers

Because you changed hardware your OS won’t reconsie new hardware, Delete partition and reinstall windows anytime u get alot of new hardware.
Another reason is that OME version’s of window’s will do same even if u change 1 peice of hardware.
Hope this helps

then the worlds fastest BSOD & system restart before I could read the stop code error.

lol, that was inevitable mate.

Dont worry about your current ET installation dude, just save your Wolfenstein – Enemy Territory folder
onto another partition, HDD, or removable media or wherever you want. Install your OS, copy your ET folder
back to wherever you want, it doesn’t have to be in C:Program Files ( you can run the game off any partition),
execute ET and your back in business. GL

did u change cpu brands?

say go from intel to amd or vice versa?

or did u keep same chipset in motherboard? ie intel, sis, via etc

coz if u change those then u wont be able to straight boot.

Firm but fair

I actually spoke to BR in game about 2 hrs ago & he said save your ET.key? (my fault,I should have wrote it down at the time)

But the reason I thought I could get away with it ,because I did it successfully on my little brother’s computer a week ago with an upgrade from socket 478 to socket 775 with DDR3 installation on win XP 32 bit
& it just said lots of new devices, install drivers pls, cheers!
And it worked without a win repair or rollback & he’s had no issues whatsoever!

So I think memory running below spec was the likely cause of the BSOD but memory specs in BIOS appeared to match timings on the RAM packaging unless the cpu was not set on 64bit (damn gigabyte BIOSes have a terrible layout, can’t find what should be simple settings).

But my primary reason for wanting to repair O/S is not because of effort involved in doing win7 install but the Sound Card used to BSOD on win7 when more than 2GB of ram was installed (driver support issue or was a couple of months ago).

This sound card absolutely kills the onboard sound on this Mobo.

http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?sid=26093 Then select “Product Information” link in middle of page

You may not realize how bad onboard sound actually is (in game & in audio apps)until you get a reasonable to expensive sound card.
Someone actually described “hearing bullet casings drop” in game & a few other things when they reviewed this card & I can confirm audio difference is immediately discernible even with my $15 headphones.

Installing different versions of ET is trial & error (more than happy to chance it & uninstall if I get it wrong)but my hardware is what I’m trying to support & after the money I spent yesterday ,I won’t be upgrading any else for a while.

Cheers ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cpu’s went from Socket 775 (original) 04a power revision P4 model 650 to Socket 1156 Core i5 model 750

Mobo Chipset’s from 925x to P55 (all Intel)

GPU’s from ATI x850xt to Asus 5770 (Ati GPU)

Ram from Corsair Value Select 4GB(4x 1GB sticks) DDR2 533 to 4GB(2x 2GB kit) G.Skill DDR3 – 1600

Same HDD (Sata2 500GB in 2 equal partitions)

Same optical drive / psu / case.

Is that a game or anime background? If anime, which one? Looking for new series.

Grabbed it off the web so I’m not sure,if you start a new thread I’ll upload the proper wallpaper there, but I’d look at the bottom right hand corner, there’s some website there, you might need to magnify it to read it ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Microsoft usually bum their own copy protection in whatever they make. Have u heard of sysprep? Its available on the windows CD under ‘support’ and there is some cab file and its in there.
Basically it is for mirroring a windows computr. I believe U can make an image of XP, and ‘lock it’. Then u are supposed to go make images of the hard disk for all your computers in your 10 billion employee company.

When U boot into the hard drive again, it recalculates all the SSIDs and GUIDS and UIDS and IDS and stuff. U know – all the unique identifiers.

Or you could just use a free operating system and never be prompted for a license key ever again and have the hdd work in any machine u plonk it in with no changes. ๐Ÿ™‚

does this box go out to the internetnt? HI MUM! LOOK IM BPUTTING WORDS ON THE COMPUTR AND THEY COME OUT THE OTHTER SIDE ON OTHER PEEOPLESSSSS COMPUTER

The impression I get is that in crude terms, you are “Ghosting a drive” which is fine except ,I have already Bobbla’d my drive ๐Ÿ˜ณ

You network admin fanboi’s crack me up,I just asked someone to explain what all your abbreviations mean…lool

Zomg!!! Point & click works under ze millions of nix distro’s? jk ๐Ÿ˜‰

P.S. Using a VLK under 64 bit,it is a broken installation not a licensing issue, but an IT guy recommended win7 for O/S support for H/W update, just putting the inevitable off for as long as possible ๐Ÿ™

So the error reads “The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context”

Thats a bug with IE Tabs. To fix the problem, Just un-install IE and re-install IE.

To uninstall IE7 – : Click Start, click Run, type %windir%ie7spuninstspuninst.exe

Also refer to this URL for reference –> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

This will fix your problem, no need to re-install your entire OS.

Just looked at what you said & opened IE ,selected Help,About & discovered the rollback had set it to IE6 sp2. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I didn’t uninstall as that’s almost at default install anyway ,but your advice about d’l’ing updated IE I took .

I couldn’t use win update so I got it from here http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/02/windows-internet-explorer-8-ie8-free-official-direct-download-links/

Ran the install & restarted,& you will LYAO ,it’s working properly now! ๐Ÿ˜€

Only problem now is I have 1/4 GB of updates to d/l & that’s not the updates to those updates either! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

But IE/WinUpdate/M$update is working properly now!!!!

Thank you all for your help & cheers to Moe for the clarification!! ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

I’m running WinXP 64bit SP2, I don’t think there is a SP3 for 64bit,but I am aware of SP3 for 32bit,but I will scrutinize win Update to be sure & make a file comparison against the one you have posted here!

Cheers

P.S. bad news,my younger brother pointed me to this wiki page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP_x64#Windows_XP_Professional_x64_Edition

Refer to section under Service Packs.

Maybe I should save the bandwidth & go Win7 after all… ๐Ÿ™
