I overlooked power supply – is it really that important to get a 400w one?

Yup PSU’s are important as it powers your whole rig. Anything under 400W will be straining at load which will be about 90% of the time with your specs ๐Ÿ˜€
Generally with any box I wouldnt go any lower than 400W and as lestat stated ‘you can never have too much powa!’.

LOL you insert a sandwich into the DVD rom and out comes a fresh toast. NOW THAT IS WHAT I WANT IN MY PC NEXT!

I would stick with 6600GT if you can get it cheap, even lestats offer is good :). As for prices I searched the web and these are not my offerings just so you know.

Power supply issue… The more the better but looking at your setup I would not bother getting more than 600W…heck even max500W would do it.

I already cook bacon and eggs on top of my xbox 360.. those machines are so poorly made!

I’ll look into that $23 dollar one from msy, cheers for the tip.
I’ve got cpu, got gfx card – Thanks heaps kabal.

Now for RAM, Im prob gonna grab 2 x 512mb sticks off ebay.
Found a brand new pair for 40 bucks – is that a good price?

The more the better but dont worry it wont “tickle” it too much. (it will be fine) What you need to know is how many pins does your motherboard need to supply power. If this is a new brand of power supply and you have a fairly old motherboard then these two can be imcompatible due to different ammount of pins.

Double check. Can anyone comment on this because im not %100 sure (I havent looked up these hardware devices).

As for the ram of ebay…sounds good to me.

TBH I wouldnt go cheap on PSU’s or this may happen —>

Unfortunately for PSU’s you do get what you pay for and that shaw brand is pretty much FTL. My suggestion is find an Antec/Silverstone/Corsair branded PSU for safety sake.

From MSY they have Coolermaster Extreme 390W for $49 or a Thermaltake 430W for $45, would be much more reliable than that shaw one. The higher the Watts of the PSU wont fry your box as they have regulated output.

As for the pins, they all still have the 4pins, the newer models would have more sata power plugs but for the above models I mentioned they should accommodate you, if in doubt just email the store to make sure.

the new shaw power supply’s come with split pin configuation depending on the board be it old or new it is covered as new you leave em joined old you simply click it apart.and i was goin with the $23 one for as mess did not want to pay a lot

a pc will only draw the power it needs and i have built pc’s with the shaw 860 tri fans and they run fine and are still running fine.and yes phat he said pci but i guess you never heard of the OLD pci slots the white ones they are NOT PCI-E they are as old as VESA and ISA slots. And mess if your check your pm i am throwing in ram for free ๐Ÿ™‚ cant buy better than free ๐Ÿ™‚ i think the ones i have are 512mb but am digging up some 1gb ones hopefully from a mate.

Kabal is a sexy man.

I’ll give the PSU a miss for now – keep a close eye on how my board runs with this new stuff and upgrade it if its going bad.

Ive actually got one of the first LCD screens.. haha 15″ completly square one –

@Lestat – just goto whirlpool.net.au and search for threads about shaw psu’s. The horror stories can compete with the number of Dodo hate threads.
You must be lucky with that shaw 860 but then again it has 3 fans, have no idea how that works in terms of directing airflow.

P.S – Grats mess on popping your LCD cherry ๐Ÿ˜€

The pic was an illustration of what can happen if one decides to use a crap PSU.
The newer shaw’s ‘may’ be good(which I highly doubt) but the MSY bargin bin one isnt. Big difference between budget and premium models.
