I have just put Windows 7 on one PC and I have XP on another, and they both are connected to the internet and each other through a router. They both connect to the internet ok , but can’t seem to see each other. Can any one give any suggestions? ๐Ÿ™

Have you

a) set up a network on either on or both of them.

b) using a router thats also a network hub or is just a internet router

Getting a network hub where all Pc’s go into and then one line out to router is what we have and works fine.
Setting up a network can be alot off miss and hit sometimes though

I will look into this as I am under the same restrictions, but win7 64bit networking is bobbla compared to the ease of use for networking in XP.

Having bypassed Vista I am not qualified to offer comment about that.

Something that might be a bit obvious is windows firewall on both PC’s or a firewall program that is actively denying connections to your computer.

Just had a look at my settings & this may or may not be relevant.

Click Start, right click on computer & select properties, on the left select Remote Settings , there is options for remote desktop settings & by default it is on “don’t allow connections to this computer”.

But I may very well be looking at the wrong thing, so “caveat emptor” (buyer beware).

Last thing,Check that they are on the same “Workgroup” under the “computer name” tab in “system properties”.

I have only just upgraded in the last couple of weeks so I am still learning what are the right settings for this O/S.

Through your router, set them a static IP. Then try connecting to each computer via their ip, try pinging them and try pinging the router from each computer. You should be able to find which computer is blocking connection this way.

Ok ,I did some testing as promised & will attach some pics for when my descriptive abilities fail me.

For win7 (using ultimate myself) & XP pro machines (32 or 64 bit is irrelevant) you can do the following,if you have passwords on your user accounts (ie.logging in with a password).

After applying all the settings below,be sure to restart all machines changes are being applied to before you try to connect to other machines just to be safe.

Under XP pro you need to dis-able “Simple File Sharing” http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/winxpnetworking/ht/winxpsfs.htm

Under win7 is more tricky,go to start/control panel/network & sharing center/choose homegroup & sharing options/change advanced sharing settings/Home or Work (current profile).

Under Homegroup connections “change from windows recommended to the option underneath it.

Click Apply or Save Changes depending on which O/S you are using.

Ok,now reboot if your using XP pro or log-out & then back in if your using win7 (still prefer reboot to be sure).

Now you need your IP addresses (I use DHCP in router not static IP’s which means they should change regularly because the are assigned by router)

To get your IP address under windows do the following.

Under XP pro click start/run type cmd then press enter, in the command prompt (little black window folks)type ipconfig & the result you want is called IP Address 192.168.1.0 (the zero is an example, you insert the number you have there).

Under win7 click start &type cmd in search box (at the bottom) then press enter, in the command prompt (little black window folks)type ipconfig & the result you want is called IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 (the one is an example, you insert the number you have there).

These numbers on the end should always be different on each machine on your network (think of them as an ID).

So to connect to the C drive on another machine with the IP address of 192.168.1.1 you would type in start/run or start/search box \192.168.1.1C$ & wait for it to ask you for the user name & password (personal firewalls may block this, windows firewall should allow it) click ok & I personally would not remember the the log-in details unless you are using a static IP address (for a first run I would say no just in case it doesn’t work, you can always do it later).

the IP address you type in is the one you are going to and not the one you are connecting from & the drive letter may be change for ppl with multiple drives or if you have renamed your drives.

the $ sign means the root of the drive & is called a network share (ask a network admin),there are security concerns accessing directly into the root of a drive “if you are remembering log-in details on another computer or if you don’t know what your doing”.

I noticed it takes me far longer to connect from xp pro to win7 machines than vice-versa.

If you need more info or just have questions, keep posting or msg me in-game. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for all the assistance. I also went to the Microsoft site and went through the forums for Win 7 and XP, which also gave me some good advice. They appear to be seeing each other now. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Was that doing what I suggested or what Micro$oft & forums recommended?

If it was the latter, would you mind posting links or posting what you did?

Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

I used the info from the MS forums, but now I can’t seem to locate the exact post as it was a link from another post and I can’t get back to that either as it has moved as others have been posted. I am still having ocassional problems printing from Win7 to XP, which has the printer attached to it. I will keep trying to properly sort it out and let you know.
