Planning on buying the following:

Case: Obsidian 800d
Mobo: Asus Rampage II Extreme
CPU: Intel i7 930
GPU: Geforce GTX470
PSU: 1000w Antec Quattro
RAM: 6gb DDR3 Triple Channel Corsair 7-8-7-20
HDD: 1TB WD SATA-III 64mb 7200rpm
Drive: Samsung BluRay/DVD-RW+
Monitor: Samsung XL2370
CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster V8

What do ya reckon? Only one I'm not too sure on is the CPU Cooler. It is really only a placeholder until I suss out watercooling.

If you're going to spend that sorta money at least chuck an uber fast SSD in.

Also I would buy two lower spec cards and either SLI or x-fire them (depending on which mobo you go), will get better bang for buck.

Oh and can I have your old pc (buying about an $800 case arent you??)

rent yourself a hotel room.. get 10 of your best mates... get a whole heap of drugs and piss.. go for a night on the town... continue to tell that lovely group of ladies that u have a mad hotel room full of drugs and piss... escort them back to your room... completely fuck their brains out for 12 hours... then brag to your mates about the greatest moment of your life and how much better this idea was then building a new comp

Dont go such a big HD, get 2, 1 fast(200gb raptor), and 1 for storage(500gb whateva).

The HD is really the last bottleneck of PC's. Go SSD if u have the dosh, otherwise a Raptor is the next best thing.

Oh, and if you're gonna OC everything, you will need more cooling than you have listed. Maybe consider an Antec 900/1200 case to help keep things nice and cool.

Have fun.

Just a note on SSDs, I believe they are actually slower than conventional disks for accessing large contiguous files. So for something like a media server they are not really ideal.

Thanks for the tip on the case G. I do plan on water cooling it eventually so that was why that case was my target. Will look into the Antec tohugh.

And I WAS going to get an SSD but hicksy laughed ferociously at me! And he still hasn't explained why!!!

Haven't read too much into SLI, how does that work? I would have my primary card, the GTX470, and they all connect etc but what does it do for performance. Does it effectively act like one huge gfx card or can you specify which card certain games use etc.

my idea trumps all yours you nerds
No joke, who spends 3k on a computer? A million better uses. Buy a bouncy castle. You will be the toast of the town.

I still chuckle when I remember asking ulti what he was going to spend K-Rudd's cash on.

You have your hobbies and I have mine. Don't hijack my thread please. Stick to the topic or I'll delete your posts.

SLI and crossfire allow more gpu power for less money afaik. Chuck 2 5770's in a mobo and check your score - cheaper, cooler than the 470 afaik again.

Raptors - good speed but LOUD.

If you are going to water cool and want room, go the Antec 1200 over the Antec 900 (I have one), more room. Or go a Lian KC-62 mid range case, good value and high quality.

Yea I was looking it up and I tihnk I will opt for the HD5870 if I get a single card. Would you say a singe HD5870 or a 2x crossfire HD5770 would be better?

Theres arguement about that - what I hear is that they are on a par. You have to ask yourself how much graphics power do you need at this point - like buy 2 5770's for under $400 or go a 5870.....or buy one 5770 and wait for the next generation to come out lol.
