Best PC hardware price search engine for Australia
http://www.staticice.com.au/ (Start with this 1st !!! )

Best prices for computer stuff in general in Australia
1) http://msy.com.au/ (get the "Best prices on parts" PDF) from these guys , it will tell you what you should be paying!

For Victorian Customers I recommend (after the above links of course)

2) http://www.scorptec.com.au/ (Agree with Thomopson)
3) http://pcmaniacs.com.au/
4) http://www.cpl.net.au/ (a bit pricey , I use all other links before this one)

For Case Modding & Customized Equips (water cooling , Top quality PSU's , etc)
http://pccasegear.com/ ( Agree with Thompson on this one too )

If Hicksy cant help you, goto umart.com.au, generally cheaper than MSY but they dont subscribe to static ice. Might be on shopbot?

Never, under any circumstances, goto gamedude.com.au.

If you need a hand building it, give me a yell.

Aside from Hicksy ...

I've used techbuy.com.au for years without any issues. Good service, fast delivery. Pricing is competitive, but not sure if they are rock-bottom, and they generally have stuff in stock. Quick and easy.

have any of you lapped your cpu and heatsink? I think I will do that on my next system, but haven't done it before. Recommendations?

What grit paper etc?

For the dummies, what is lapping your cpu / heatsink?

I have a mate that helps noob assemble his pewters and everytime we build one he uses some silver paste to attach the cpu with the heatsink. He reckons its a way better conductor than the rubbish the manufacturers use.

nah that's the thermal conductor. And he's right, manufacturer stuff sucks balls, Arctic Silver is the way to go.

Lapping is when you sand the cpu and heatsink base down to get an even flatter surface for heat distribution. If done correctly it can take quite a few degrees off your cpu core temp.

oh I c. Come to think of it sanding down is probably a good idea. Is it just done by hand or do you need something more precise?

I have always wondered why the manufacturers cheap out on the goo.

I've never done it, but from what I've seen, you have like 6 different grit sandpapers, and lay them down on a table, place the heatsink on top and gently move it around in a circular motion. Moving from the harshest grit to the softest grit until it is smooth as a babies ass.

Actually the stock thermal pastes are good enough provided you're just using the box as is without any overclocking, etc.
As for lapping..... why bother, just go water cooling instead :)

Heh, a friend of my mate did his own water cooling at one point. He had a bucket of water sitting next to his pewter.

Just seemed like too much could go wrong for me. To be honest is there any real need to do massive overclocking these days?

Water cooling is worth it if you're persistent on extracting every bit of processing power of your box.
Got a mate who does graphic works and he always water cools his boxes. He claims to reach max temp of 25 degrees on full load during the hottest of summers and averages between 15 - 20 degrees.

P.S noob, your friends doing it wrong if he uses a bucket instead of a water tower :D
