Help me resolve the resolution pls

Here's the thing - ever since I started playing ET I have been playing on a 15" Dell CRT monitor with everything set the way I wanted.
After years of badgering from sons I have bit the bullet and bought a digital monitor. Trouble is now everything is borked on ET when played in fullscreen - the aspect ratio is all wrong and the graphics quality is fuzzy. I have fiddled with in-game settings but most of the time the game crashes because I changed something that the monitor didn't like/can't handle

So I was wondering what resolution/graphics settings you guys use, or any suggestions in general you can give. Ta very much.

Specs:
Monitor - LG 22" LCD Model E2211T native res 1920x1080
GPU - nVidia GeForce 9500 GT (yeah I know but it does the job - or should I upgrade ?)
Mobo - Azus M4N68T-M
CPU - AMD Athlon II X2 245 processor 2.90 GHz
RAM - 4 GB
OS - Windows 7 32 bit home premium

well, I run all highest graphics settings..... and a res of 640x480

Try putting this into your config:

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customwidth "1920"
seta r_customheight "1080"
seta r_displayrefresh "0"

the r_mode -1 tells the game its a custom aspect ratio and displayrefresh 0 should tell the game
to use your monitor's default refresh rate...
